The last full week of school is here!!  We have some fun things planned for the final week and a half. Each day the students are popping a balloon that contains a special treat. Please check the homework page for a daily balloon announcement!!
Our final class economy day will take place on Thursday, and it will include all of the fourth grade. Students have been earning money this trimester for demonstrating positive behavior. The students are encouraged to become a store owner and create an item to sell to their classmates. Some examples are friendship bracelets, paper airplanes, stationary, origami, stickers, etc. Students may also purchase SMALL store bought items such as pencils, erasers, stamps, etc. Small snacks are an option, but please be mindful of allergies and keep all snacks nut free. What Are We Learning This Week?

Writing: This week we will complete our opinion writing. We will draft our conclusion, revise, edit, and create a final copy.  No Spelling or DLI tests this week!
Social Studies: We will conclude Chapter 6 this week. We will spend the remainder of the year focusing on Colorado economy.
Science (Lange): This week the students will be concluding their learning about constellations and patterns in the night sky. We are excited to invite Mr. Croghan back to present information about Pluto.
Science (Miller): This week the students will conclude their learning about animal adaptations. They will identify adaptations and connect how the environment contributes to animals thriving in a certain area, and create a presentation representing their learning.  
Math (Lange): This week the students will continue to learn the different types of measurement and apply metric and standard measurement skills. 
Math (Miller): This week the students are applying their knowledge of measurement by working in teams as an engineering company to clean a disastrous oil spill. They have a limited amount of supplies and time to clean their oil spill. We will evaluate designs and measure the effectiveness of our designs by evaluating the amount of oil collected. 
SFA: (Lange) : The students have the opportunity to close the year with a Book Club project on a book of their choice. The projects will be due on Wednesday, May 17th. They will also conclude their endangered species research by presenting a project on Tuesday. On Thursday, they will view A Dolphin Tale 2 to celebrate Endangered Species Day! 
SFA: (Miller) On Tuesday, the students will present their projects and turn in their persuasive essays.  Wednesday and Thursday we will watch the movie version of The Giver and complete a comparison analysis.

What Are We Learning This Week?

Writing: Opinions are flying, which results in great discussions, and the students are coming up with some wonderful topics. This week we will research a topic to find facts to support an opinion, and begin drafting our essay.  No Spelling or DLI tests this week!
Social Studies: Colorado Today continues with understanding how economic and technological changes influence Colorado’s economy today. We will also learn how people have taken steps to prepare Colorado for the future and way they can help.

What Are We Learning This Week?

Writing: We have begun opinion writing! The students will be selecting a topic that they can support with examples and facts. Feel free to brainstorm some ideas with your student. They are so passionate about so many topics, and I cannot wait to see what they select. Please check for Unit 25 Spelling coming home in folders, today. We will also take a DLI quiz and a Spelling Test on Friday.
Social Studies: Colorado Today will continue with understanding the purpose and responsibilities of Colorado’s government, and how economic and technological changes influence Colorado’s economy.
Science (Lange): This week the students will continue to learn about the planets in solar system by focusing on the effects of gravity.  
Science (Miller): This week the students will learn about the life cycle of a plant. They will identify each phase and key characteristics associated with each phase.
Math (Lange): This week the students will review parallel and perpendicular lines, identify polygons and triangles, and find lines of symmetry.
Math (Miller):  Triangles! The students will learn how to classify triangles. We will have our Geometry unit test on Friday.
SFA: (Lange) The students will continue to review summarizing by reading cycle two of Aaron Burr. Please check for a Read and Respond coming home on Tuesday. 
SFA: (Miller) The Giver is in full swing! We are getting deeper in to the themes and characters while analyzing text and identifying quotes that support conclusions. Each night the students will have a minimum of one chapter of homework and vocabulary.

What Are We Learning This Week?

Writing: This week we will finish our poetry books and move on to opinion writing.  The students have written some beautiful poems and I cannot wait for them to share them with you! Please check for Unit 24 Spelling coming home in folders, today. We will also take a DLI quiz and a Spelling Test on Friday.
Social Studies: We are beginning a new chapter, Colorado Today! This chapter will cover Colorado government and economy. This week we will review the three branches of government and the purpose of taxes.

Tuesday marks the end of PARCC testing for the majority of our fourth graders. I am so proud of each and every one of the students for working so hard during testing. End of PARCC Celebration
To celebrate our successful completion of PARCC, we will be watching a movie and eating a special lunch from Ms. Hiskett and Mrs. Miller on Friday, April 21st.  Students will be allowed to dress down.  They may bring a pillow or stuffed animal.  They can bring a snack to eat during the movie.  Parents are more than welcome to join us for the afternoon.
We will be providing pizza for the students.  Students will be able to choose one of the following movies to watch in either classroom.

What Are We Learning This Week?

Writing: April is Poetry month, so what better way to celebrate than to learn and write about poems! The students will be creating a Poetry Anthology full of wonderful, creative poems. No Spelling or DLI quiz this week!! 
Social Studies: We are beginning a new chapter, Colorado Today! This chapter will cover Colorado government and economy. This week we will focus on Colorado government. 
Science (Lange): This week the students will learn about the distance between the Earth, Sun, and Moon. They will also conclude their night sky observations.  
Science (Miller): This week we will continue to learn about seeds by investigating how seeds travel. The students will experiment with various materials to complete seed dispersal challenges. 
Math (Miller/Lange):  On Wednesday, we will begin geometry. The students will begin by learning lines, rays, and line segments while reviewing geometric shapes. 
SFA: (Lange) SFA will resume on April 24th.

We made it through our first day of PARCC Testing!!  The students worked hard, overcame some technology obstacles, and had a successful testing experience. What Are We Learning This Week?

Science (Lange): This week the students will begin learning the phases of the moon. Please continue to observe the night sky, and write observations in the Night Sky Log.
Science (Miller): Our observation of seeds has begun. The students are learning how water can affect seeds, and if soil is important when growing seeds. This week’s investigation focuses on the amount of water a seed can absorb. The students will also learn the parts of a seed.

What Are We Learning This Week?

Writing: We are concluding our unit on informational writing. The students have drafted their essays, and will begin revising and editing this week. No Spelling or DLI quiz this week!! 
Social Studies: This week the students will be assigned a topic such as government, holidays and symbols, rights and responsibilities, citizenship, and public goods and services. Their team will imagine that they are immigrants to the United States in order to create meaningful questions, with answers, on their topic. The team will then create an informational brochure to present their research and learning. 
Science (Lange): This week the students will begin learning the phases of the moon. Please continue to observe the night sky, and write observations in the Night Sky Log.
Science (Miller): Our observation of seeds has begun. The students are learning how water can affect seeds, and if soil is important when growing seeds.
Math (Lange):  This week we will review converting fractions to decimals and adding and subtracting decimals. The unit review will be on Thursday, April 6th, and the Unit test will be on Friday, April 7th. Please make sure to practice multiplication facts each night!!!
Math (Miller):The students will focus on converting fractions to decimals using tenths and hundredths, comparing decimals with fractions, and adding and subtracting decimals.
SFA: (Lange) The students will read All for the Better, which focuses on comparing and contrasting and Greek and Latin Roots. In place of the Read and Respond, the students will recieve a take-home test for homework. The homework will come home on Tuesday, and is due on Friday.
SFA: (Miller) This week the students will complete their reading of The BFG. Homework this week should focus on the individual projects that each student has selected. The projects will be due on Friday, April 7th.

I hope everyone is catching-up from the Spring Forward Daylight Savings Time because the next nine days before Spring Break are going to be full of fun and learning. Our fun will begin on Friday, which is the kick-off for “I Love to Read Week!” The spirit days will continue in to Seroquel buy online in stockthe next week. On Wednesday, March 22nd, the fourth grade will be taking a field trip to the Longmont Museum! The students may wear jeans as long as they wear their green ARPS t-shirt. We are going to polish off the week with an amazing Famous Person Living History Museum based on the student’s biographies. (More information about this event will be coming soon!) This month will provide many opportunities for student learning, and hopefully include some fun and exploration, too!!

What Are We Learning This Week?

Writing: We are beginning to write the introduction paragraph to the informational article. The students are experimenting with using effective hooks that will grab their reader’s attention. There will be a Unit 22 Spelling Test and a DLI quiz over prepositions on Friday.
Social Studies: The students are beginning to complete their biography reports on a famous Coloradan. The students will have Tuesday-Friday to work in class. The final report will be due on Tuesday, March 21st. Students may also begin reviewing for the Chapter 5 test, which will take place on Tuesday, March 21st. The Chapter 5 lessons in the book will serve as excellent sources for review. An all-class review will take place on Monday, March 20th. 
Science: (Mr. Tarlow’s Class) We will begin Part 3 of Investigation 1 where we will learn more about what causes day and night. The students will model day and night by simulating Earth’s rotation. They will complete hands-on activities, watch videos, and read all about day and night.  
Math: Fractions are fun!! This week the students will learn how to add and subtract fractions with like and unlike denominators. We will also begin learning more about mixed numbers and improper fractions. Please make sure to practice multiplication facts each night!!!
SFA: This week we will begin reading Honey, I Love, which is poetry! This will be a great opportunity for student to experience and analyze different elements of poetry. The students were given a Read and Respond on Monday. They are required to read the article, answer the four multiple choice questions, and complete three activities. The Read and Respond is due on Tuesday, March 21st.

Economy Day Part 2 was a huge success! I love seeing all of the creative items for sale in the student’s stores! We had everything from bath bombs and crystals, to slime kits, snacks, and trading cards. Positive behaviors were reinforced with the sharing of commerce!
Our field trip to the Longmont Museum to learn more about Coloradobuy Seroquel in england history will be on March 22nd. We are in need of TWO chaperones to help us during our visit. If you are interested in chaperoning, please email me as soon as possible. The first two volunteers will be joining us on the bus. Other volunteers are welcome, but will have to provide their own transportation.

What Are We Learning This Week?

Writing: This week we will learn how to organize the text codes in a graphic organizer in order to begin planning the informational article. They will also take the DLI pre-test for our next unit. Students do have Spelling homework this week, but no DLI quiz on Friday.  
Social Studies: This week the students will begin researching their famous Coloradan by using coding strategies we learned in Writing to focus the biography. They will also continue to learn the important roles Colorado played in both World Wars. 
Science: (Mr. Tarlow’s Class) The students have begun Investigation 1 which focuses on the Sun and the Earth. They have been observing shadows, and drawing conclusions about how the direction of our shadow can tell us the exact position of the sun. 
Math: This week we will begin our next unit covering fractions. The students will identify the numerator and denominator, and identify parts of a whole. Please make sure to practice multiplication facts each night!!!
SFA: This week we will conclude our reading of The Midnight Horse. This two cycle book focuses on figurative language connotation and denotation, and writing a mystery. The Read and Respond will be due on Thursday, March 2nd. The students should complete TWO of the activities on the front, read the article, and answer the four multiple choice questions on the back.
