It is hard to believe, but we have reached the end of the second trimester, and we are over half way through the school year! The end of the trimester is on Friday, February 24th. Please check with your student to ensure that all work has been completed and turned in to the appropriate teacher.

What Are We Learning This Week?

Writing: We are coding text evidence!! This week we will continue to code and cite text evidence from an informational article. The students are really beginning to think like a writer!
Social Studies: This week students will begin researching information for their Colorado Biography Report. The report will be completed in class, and the students will be applying their coding for text evidence skills while they research. We will also learn how Colorado developed economically from the Cripple Creek gold rush through the Great Depression
Science: (Ms. Hiskett’s Class) Our last week has arrived. The students have learned so much about space. I love hearing the connections they are making with the information they already knew. The final test for Sun, Moon, and Stars will be on Thursday, February 23rd! A study guide will be sent home on Tuesday, February 21st. The test will be open note. 
Math: We are learning strategies that will help us divide. I can really tell that students have been practicing their facts because they are connecting the multiplication and division concepts. Please keep practicing basic multiplication facts each night!!
SFA: This week marks the beginning of the third trimester in SFA. We will begin by reading The Midnight Horse on Thursday, February 23rd. This two cycle book focuses on figurative language, so we are spending the first two days introducing and reviewing the different forms of figurative language. The Read and Respond will be due on Thursday, March 2nd. The students should complete TWO of the activities on the front, read the article, and answer the four multiple choice questions on the back.

We have some TALENTED fourth grade students, and they continue to shine! I have been so impressed with all of the hard work and dedication, academically and behaviorally, they have demonstrated so far this year. What Are We Learning This Week?

Writing: We are still in the process of learning about informational writing. Last week we learned the research path, and  began learning about different ways to code information in articles to ensure the research matches the assignment. 
Social Studies: Colorado history is FUN! This week we will begin by learning about Doc Susie and her impact on Colorado. The students will be selecting a famous person from Colorado, and they will research and write a biography. We will also learn how Colorado grew in the late 1800’s.
Science: (Ms. Hiskett’s Class) This week we will begin looking at the reasons stars move across the night sky, and how telescopes help us investigate the sky. We are approaching the end of the trimester. The final test for Sun, Moon, and Stars will be next Thursday, February 23rd!
Math: This week we will begin relating multiplication with division. The students will begin to learn the process for long division. Please keep practicing basic multiplication facts each night!!
SFA: This week we will continue to read Charlotte’s Web.This unit is a four cycle unit. We will complete the fourth cycle on Wednesday! The students have been working on identifying theme, chunking words, and using descriptive language to write riddles about the characters. On Thursday, we will celebrate all of our hard works by participating in a Pig Out Feast! The final test and the Read and Respond will be due on Wednesday, February 15th.

What Are We Learning This Week?

Writing: The students will begin working on the research portion of their informational article assignment. In the article, the students will explain how spices have played an important role in history throughout the world. This week we will learn how to find text evidence that supports our writing task.
Social Studies: We have reached the conclusion of Chapter 4, Colorado’s Early History. The students will be reviewing Chapter 4 on Monday, and the Chapter 4 Test will be on Tuesday, February 7th. The rest of the week we will begin previewing what is to come in Chapter 5, The Centennial State.
Science: (Ms. Hiskett’s Class) What are the phases of the Moon? This week we will learn the phases, and review how frequently the Moon cycles through each phase. Towards the end of the week, we will begin Investigation 4 which focuses on stars and constellations.
Math: I am so impressed with every student’s progress through multi-digit multiplication! The students are zooming through the lessons, and are becoming professional multiplication masters. This week we will learn strategies to multiply two digit numbers by two digit numbers.
SFA: This week we will continue to read Charlotte’s Web.This unit is a four cycle unit. We have reached the 100th Day of School, and February has arrived all in the same week!! The students are continuing to work hard to accomplish their goals. They have begun working on their presentations for the Student Led Conferences coming up in March. Please be looking for the conference sign-up, which will be emailed on Wednesday, February 1st. What Are We Learning This Week? 

Writing: We will be embarking on a new adventure centered on Informational writing! The students will spend this week identifying key features of informational text in a mentor text. The students will be working towards the completion of an informational article.
Social Studies: We will start the week with a review of primary and secondary sources. Then the students will learn how Colorado became a state and how that affected settlers, Mexican Americans, and Native Americans. The students will be reviewing Chapter 4 on Thursday and Monday of next week. The Chapter 4 Test will be on Tuesday, February 7th. 
Science: (Ms. Hiskett’s Class) On Monday, we will review for our test on Tuesday, January 31st!! Because we did not send a study guide home, the students will be taking an open book/note partner test. I apologize for any confusion. On Thursday we will return to Investigation 2 and learn the phases of the moon.
Math: We have completed our initial study of multiplication! This week will begin using multiplication strategies to multiply multi-digit numbers by a one digit number. Please continue to practice the basic multiplication facts nightly!!

Writing: The Snow Globe fiction essays are AMAZING! I love the individual creativity shining through each essay. This week will learn and apply the Voice Trait to our writing by Shopping for our Voice!! 
Social Studies: Colorado’s Early History continues with learning about the first people in Colorado, the Colorado Territory, and how Colorado became a state.
Science: (Ms. Hiskett’s Class) Ms. Lange will debut in Science this week by teaching the students about the reasons planets orbit the Sun. The students will also learn about Sir Isaac Newton’s laws of motion.  Please be on the look-out for an Investigation 3 Study Guide coming home late this week. The test will be on Tuesday, January 31st!!
Math: We are approaching the end of Unit 3! Our Unit 3 test will be on Thursday, January 26th. This week we will review order of operations, exponents, and create factor trees in order to identify prime numbers.  Please continue to practice multiplication facts nightly!

Ms. Lataille’s class will be coming in on Friday to present to us their project to Help the Homeless. What Are We Learning This Week? 
Writing: We will complete our fiction piece, If I Were Trapped in a Snow Globe. Students have worked through the Writing Process, and have learned about incorporating strong Word Choice in their writing. 
Social Studies: Ms. Lange will take off with Chapter 4, Colorado’s Early History this week. The chapter will begin with with studying Clara Brown: Angel of the Rockies. The student will make connections to how the past shapes our present and future.
Science: (Ms. Hiskett’s Class) We had a small change of plans because we are so excited about planets! The students have selected a planet that they are going to research and write an informational paragraph. Then they will design an alien that has at least three adaptations for that planet. I’m so excited to see what these amazing students create!!  
 
Math: We LOVE multiplication!! This week the students will continue to spend time in a workshop setting. They will begin by answering some questions that will assist them in a self-assessment of their understanding of break apart products and multiplication. We will complete the workshop by the end of the week. Please continue to practice multiplication facts nightly!
SFA: This week we will read Charlotte’s Web.This unit is a four cycle unit. During the first cycle we will focus on characterization, connotation and denotation, and we will write a persuasive essay.

Our first week back after the holiday break was wonderful! It was so great to hear all of the stories that the students shared. Last week we spent some time working on our academic, behavior, and personal goals for the second trimester. Each student is working very hard to achieve their goals. Weather Reminder: The temperatures are definitely getting colder! We try to go outside as often as possible to provide the students with a nice break. Please make sure your student is dressed appropriately for the daily weather. This may include snow boots, snow pants, hats, gloves, and scarves.
What Are We Learning This Week?
Writing: Our new writing unit is all about fiction. We will continue to explore elements of fiction. We will continue to work on our writing piece, “If I Were Trapped in a Snowglobe…”
Science: Investigation 2 is all about the night sky! The student will be coming home with Night Sky Logs to complete this week, Monday through Thursday. I am also asking the students to complete observations during Winter Break.
Social Studies: We will study the political regions and learn about the counties in Colorado. Towards the end of the week, we will begin learning about Colorado’s main resources and how people use them.
Math: We are continuing our learning of factors and multiples. This week we will look at prime numbers. Please keep practicing those basic multiplication facts every night!!

Spelling Bee Coming Soon!!
– Students were sent home with a list of fourth grade practice words. 
-Students will compete in a classroom spelling bee. (TBD but before Jan. 20th)
– The top three spellers from each classroom will compete in the grade level bee. (TBD but before Jan. 27th)
– The top two spellers from the grade level will advance to the all school spelling bee on February 10th, which will include the winners from 5th, 6th, and 7th grades.
-The school winner will move on to the local spelling bee held in Denver on March 11th. Parents will be responsible for providing transportation to and from the local bee in Denver.
