I cannot believe we are already approaching the month of December! I was very excited to see all of the students cold, but smiling, faces as they walked in to school this morning. What Are We Learning This Week?
Writing: Our new writing unit is all about fiction. We will explore elements of fiction, and generate ideas for writing.
Science: This week we will discuss what we can learn from studying the length and direction and shadows, and what causes day and night. We are beginning to make connections between the position of the sun and the length and direction of our shadows.
Social Studies: This week we will begin Chapter 3 The Geography of Colorado. We will focus on Zebulaon Montgomery Pike and why he thought the front range of Colorodo was special. We will also learn about different places in Colorado and including geographic and physical features, and main cities such as Denver and Colorado Springs.

It is hard to believe that October is almost over! This year is flying by, and I’m so medikament Seroquelexcited for what is still to come!! Thank you to everyone who donated and worked our cotton candy booth on Saturday for the Fall Festival. A HUGE “Thank You!” to the Jellis family for working the entire day, and to Mrs. Jellis for organizing and setting-up the booth. Another HUGE “Thank You” to Cydney’s family for carving our pumpkin for the Pumpkins on Parade. Teamwork definitely makes the dream work!!
The Learning Zone
Writing: This week’s DLI focuses on identifying conversation elements and using dialogue. We will also be completing the personal narrative project. Students will work with peers to revise and improve their drafts, edit, and then publish.
Science: We identified the patterns in the lunar phase, and now we are going to look for patterns in the stars. Our next Investigation will focus on constellations and the reasons why stars appear to move across the night sky.
Social Studies: We are deep in American history, and will spend time this week learning about continued growth in America and the deep divisions that led to the Civil War.

This Week We are Learning:
Science: The students should have completed their Night Sky Observations. We will spend the rest of this week learning the patterns and phases of the moon.
Social Studies: This week we will focus on how the United States grew out of English colonies and became and independent nation, and that the growing nation developed deep divisions that led to the Civil War.
Writing/Spelling: We will continue to work on our personal narrative. We will use peer conferencing and our knowledge of the Ideas and Organization Traits to evaluate drafts, and select the one that is the strongest in those two traits. In Spelling, we will focus on the long u spelling patterns.

October 31st – Fall Classroom Celebrations!!
Your child is invited to dress up in Halloween Costumes or as book characters for their Fall Celebrations on Monday, October 31. Here are some reminders as you help choose your child’s outfit for the day.
- Fall Celebrations are at the end of the day (2:00-3:15) so appropriate shoes should be worn throughout. Students will still attend enrichment classes and play outside on the playgrounds (weather permitting).
- Costumes should not cause a disruption during the school day.
- Costume choices should be respectful of others, should not make others feel uncomfortable or unsafe, and should not be covering your child’s face.
- Costumes that include blood, gore, weapons, face paint, or masks will not be allowed.
- Parents will be called to bring in a change of clothes should problems occur with costumes prior to the Fall Celebrations.
As we conduct our first classroom celebrations for the school year, we hope everyone has a happy and safe Halloween!

October is here, and we have a month full of learning and fun ahead of us. On Thursday we will have the opportunity to join the fifth through seventh grades for the Colorado Shakespeare Festival. We will be watching an abridged performance of The Taming of the Shrew,

Last week we were also able to spend some time with our first grade buddies. Each student interviewed their buddy, and we had a fantastic time!! We look forward to spending more time with our buddies throughout the year.
Writing: We are still learning about the Writing Process and writing a personal narrative. This week will turn our prewrititng into drafts. We will also collaborate with partners to determine the draft that has the strongest ideas.
Social Studies: This week we will begin Chapter 2 which focuses on early American history. We will review how to use a timeline to record history, and learn how European and Native American cultures were changed after their meeting.
Science: As we continue to observe the moon, we will also begin learning about the solar system. We are also very excited to invite Dennis Croghan, a parent of one of our awesome fourth graders, to present a discussion on Pluto on Tuesday afternoon. Please continue to assist your student in the completion of their Night Sky Observation Log.
